About

When the data says something that cannot be true, we ask why.

Why Anopticon

Anopticon is the panopticon with the “pan” taken out. Bentham’s panopticon is a prison built so one unseen watcher sees everyone, and no one can check the watcher. We wanted the opposite. A ship cannot be in two places at once, and it cannot cross a continent in an hour. So we look, we write down where the evidence stops, and we hand over the means to check us. Nothing hidden at the centre.

To the curious

Screens can be wrong. Transponders can be silenced, and positions can be moved. Algorithms can be confidently mistaken.

But a ship cannot be in two places at once. It cannot leave the sea without someone noticing, if someone is looking.

We are the ones looking. And anyone can look at how we look.
